Guest peaker : Dr. Mathew J Manimala
Venue : XIME
Date & Time : 14/8/2009 & 3:50 P.M

The second year of the Xime Entrepreneurship Club started off with lot of expectations and vigour as Dr. Mathew J Manimala, the author of 'Entrepreneurship Theory at the Crossroads', inaugurated the function on 14th of August, 2009. The entrepreneurship club was started by the Batch 13 students of Xime. Though the club wasn't a raving success during its first year of implementation, credits should be given to those who implemented the idea which came out as a result of a brainstorming session. The first year of the club had few guest lectures from academicians, industrialists and few entrepreneurs. The club can be said to be a part of the initial phase of evolution, as it can only get better from here.

The guest lecturer, Dr. Mathew J. Manimala is Professor of Organisational Behaviour and Jamuna Raghavan Chair Professor of Entrepreneurship at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. He was also the Chairperson of NSRCEL (NS Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning) at IIM Bangalore. He obtained an MBA degree from the University of Cochin, an MBSc degree from the University of Manchester and a doctoral degree from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. He has received several academic honours and research fellowships from prestigious International agencies. Also, he has written many books on entrepreneurship, one being the 'Entrepreneurship Theory at the Crossroads'.

Vivek Thaneja, second year student of Xime, introduced the dignitaries to the audience and spoke about the plan of action for the year 2009-10, starting with the 'Business plan' in the first trimester followed by other exciting plans for the subsequent two trimesters. The introduction was followed by a brief speech of , Prof. J. Philip. President spoke about, how this idea of entrepreneurship club was close to his heart as he considered himself to be an academic entrepreneur (I'm sure everyone understands what he meant here :)).

Mr. Mathew, the guest lecturer, enlightened the audience with his knowledge and enthusiasm in his speech. His speech lasted for more than a hour, tiring a few :) . Started off the speech quoting that, "Necessity is the mother of all inventions". Further, explained the meaning of entrepreneurship in the Indian context. During his speech he gave various instances of entrepreneurial activities followed in other countries. For example, in Sweden there are no rag pickers, as people are educated and trained to throw the wastes in the corresponding waste bins classified by type. As a result of this process the person throwing the waste in the right bin gets a coupon which he can claim for later.

In the Q & A session, a few questions were asked by the audience to Dr. Mathew. One notable question was, "Does starting a new firm require experience?" For which Dr. Mathew explained the Stimulus-Response theory.

Finally, he concluded the speech by stating the reason for which he couldn't be an entrepreneur, because he was a good academician :) .
